Career Counseling - What To Look For
Career counseling services, online career counseling, even free career counseling can be found almost anywhere these days. In this article I’d like to define real career counseling and list a few things you want to do so you can enjoy the best career success possible.
First off let’s talk about Mark Edward Duin’s career counseling theory, here you go...
Okay, my theory is simply this. If you want the best possible advice about how to be successful in your work life, you should not get advice from someone who has a career in counseling. You should get advice from someone who actually has a track record of success in their own work life.
Here’s an example of what I mean. I personally do not have a college degree. In fact I was a ninth grade dropout until the age of 27 and I actually spent time living on the streets. So what in the world would make me think that little old me could give better career advice than someone who has a degree in career planning and counseling?
Let me ask you this question. How much money does a career counselor make? Let’s say $50,000 per year (actually the average salary for a Director of Career Planning is slightly less than $45,000 per year nationally!). Now even though I don’t have a college degree I am compensated in six figures and I currently manage people with college degree’s (some have Masters degree’s). In addition to financial success I can also tell you that I use my talents, abilities, and interests in my career, and that, plus my salary, is what makes me successful. So who would you rather get your career advice from?
That’s what I thought! Here’s the best advice I can give you ...
1. Take a comprehensive career assessment.
2. Take an industry standard personality profile.
3. Evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses.
4. Examine yourself to find out what really turns you on, what you are interested in.
5. Make a list of your accomplishments to date.
6. Thoroughly examine all the output of information from the above five steps and ask yourself the following question, What could I be doing for a living that will allow me to use my greatest talents, abilities, interests, and skills, in a way that benefits others, and that people will be willing to pay me for?
The answer to this final question will be a powerful revelation to you. Just by taking all of the steps above, examining yourself, and asking yourself the right question, you will be able to gain a much clearer picture of what you should be doing with your life.
Just imagine how incredible your life will be when you finally are working in the ideal job for you! Can you imagine loving your work and fully enjoying what you do. Your work life will be so much better when you are finally getting paid to provide value to others while you’re having fun!
If you follow the advice in this article, you will have already experienced some very excellent career counseling..
