Career Development - Information and Ideas...

What is career development? It’s the practice of making a development career of your own success!

In this article I could talk about career development theory or I could point you toward a career development specialist, or I could simply point you toward a career development Center, but that’s not what this article is about.

This article is more about the importance of career development and learning. It’s about why you must have a career development plan so you can be successful.

You’ve probably heard the saying, \“He who fails to plan, plans to fail!\”. There’s actually a lot of truth in that statement. Let me illustrate. Let’s say you live in Omaha, Nebraska and you want to take a trip to Bangor Maine. Let’s also assume that you’re terrible geography. Now, go ahead and start your trip, without a map, without directions, without a plan. Oh, I forgot to mention you don’t have any money either. So what are the chances you’ll ever make it to your destination without a lot of problems, challenges, or difficulties? None, you’ll be lucky if you make it at all.

Now let’s try this again. You live in Omaha, Nebraska and you’re planning a trip to Bangor Maine. You’ve done a google search on MapQuest and you have an excellent set of directions that will take you from where you are to where you want to go. It shows you every turn, the most efficient route, and even estimate how long it will take you to get there. You are also very smart and you saved up money before hand so you would have plenty to spend on your fun trip. Now what are the chances you’ll make it to your destination? I’d say your chances are excellent if not certain.

Career development planning is like taking a trip. You just have to follow a simple process in order to get what you need for your journey. it’s not hard at all it just takes a little bit of time and focus.

A lot of unsuccessful people I meet are unwilling to spend time on their own self-improvement. It almost seems like they’d rather complain about where they’re at in their career, or complain about others. I guess it is easier to focus outside of yourself rather than a calling yourself, but it’s sure not as rewarding or fulfilling!

If you’re getting tired of settling for less than your best, you are probably ready to move forward. All you need is a desire and a plan. Once you have these two things your progress is almost guaranteed. Believe me, it’s a lot more exciting to live life to the full, to be a successful as you want to be. It’s downright boring to settle for anything less.

The following tips will should help you develop a plan for your career success...

1. Know where you’re starting from.

2. Decide where you’re going.

3. Make a list of everything you need in order to get from where you are now to where you want to go.

4. Seek advice from others who have been there.

5. Create a roadmap or plan that maps out the road between where you are now and where you want to be. List all the important milestones between here and there.

6. Commit yourself to follow your plan.

There’s really no magic to being successful, there are just processes that make you successful. The difference between those who accomplish much in life and those who don’t is simply this...

Successful people know what they want.

Successful people make a plan to get what they want.

Successful people follow their plans.

And that my friends is really what career and personal development are all about. So, are you ready to go after something better? Now is the time. Seize the moment as they say. If you don’t start now, will you ever?

Personal development is actually a lot of fun. It gives meaning and direction to life. Don’t be surprised how much more confident and upbeat you feel when you’ve got a plan to keep growing.

I hope this article has shown you the importance of career development..
