700 Protesters on Brooklyn Bridge – Protesting The Wrong Thing?

Posted In Career Training | No comments

Police Arrest More Than 700 Protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge, protesting corporate greed?

Many students were complaining about having so much school loan debt and not being able to find good paying jobs. But are they protesting the wrong things?

Now I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, however I am successful in business! I “earn” a 6 figure income with little more than a 9th grade education and I do hire and manage college graduates (some with masters degrees) for a Technology Company. This is despite the fact I was an alcoholic drug addict on the streets at age 20 and a 9th grade drop out till age 27 (and I don’t have a college degree).  I have little in common with college graduates, but I do have a lot in common with many super successful people. I have a different perspective that may be worth a look.

Companies hire and pay people to provide “Value”. The more value you provide the more money you typically receive. Companies don’t necessarily hire people because they have a college degree, here’s why…

Many employed college graduates readily admit they use maybe 10% of what they learned in college in their actual jobs. Is there any possibility our government run schools are tying up 4 years of a students time and charging them ten’s of thousands of dollars to teach them irrelevant things they don’t need to know and will never use?

Most businesses will confirm that many college graduates are of little or no value for years until they gain experience! Meanwhile a halfway bright non-college graduate could just go to work for 4 years and learn valuable applicable business experience. In the same 4 years they can actually become valuable.

Now of course not all college is a waste of time. However, college may well be horribly outdated and out of touch with the real needs of the business world. But the real question is this…

“How are so many super successful people (many from poor disadvantaged backgrounds) able to succeed without a college degree, while so many people with a college degree could easily be considered mediocre or poor performers in business and in life?” The answer is…

Successful people (college degree or not) are successful because they have learned success principles and are practicing them. They believe the following…

  • If your life sucks it’s your fault (regardless of your background, upbringing, education, the government, the corporate world….) because…
  • Success or failure is not determined by the circumstances or challenges you are dealt, it’s determined by how you respond to them.
  • Success or failure is rarely determined by what’s out there (education, corporate world, government, economy…) it’s almost always determined by what goes on between your ears. All successful 9th grade drop outs like me (earning 6 figures or more) use their minds to “Think”, and not just to memorize and regurgitate school lessons.
  • If you blame others and focus on why you “can’t”, you won’t.
  • When you get in the habit of asking yourself “How Can I?” You Will Find The Way… How can I be more valuable to employers? How can I be more efficient? How can I be more productive? How can I be more creative in solving problems? How can I become my best? How can I find a better job? How can I find a good job in a down economy?…
  • When you rely on others to help you get ahead (education system, government, corporate world, rich parents…who ever…) you will usually be dissatisfied with the results.
  • When you take ownership of your own success or failure and begin to use your powerful human mind to solve your problems, and use it to help you figure out how to be more successful, you’ll find far more satisfaction and far more success!

I feel sorry for all the misguided people who blame others. I feel sorry for these 700 students on the Brooklyn Bridge who may just be protesting the wrong things!

NOW BEFORE YOU GET ALL MAD at me for stating my opinions…Please think about this…

I’m glad you have the right to protest, to give your opinions, to state your case on whatever you believe! You may be right! You may be wrong! You may be part of both!

I’m so glad I still have the right to protest, state my opinions, and can make my case. I may be right, I may be wrong, I may be part of both! My only hope is that more people choose to take control of their own destiny, and that more people stop blaming others and circumstances outside of them for their current state. The reason I hope this for others is only because this is exactly what made a huge positive difference in my own life.

I guess I figure that if a former street addict 9th grade drop out like me (and so many other successful people) can use success principles to overcome challenges and gain success, then anyone can make this shift. Especially people who are smart enough to attain a college degree!

Wishing you true success and happiness in every aspect of your life!

Respectfully,

Mark Edward Duin

Career Planning – Important Lessons For Success

Posted In Career Planning | No comments

Happy 80th Birthday Dad! I just wanted to Thank YOU for Teaching Me These Lessons In Career and Life Success…

Little Mark

Thanks for Teaching Me…

The Importance of Hard Work and The Power of Sticking With It: I remember cutting out the tree stump in the back yard and rebuilding the rock wall. These two jobs showed me that you can accomplish a lot with a little hard work and by just sticking to the task. I’m so glad I carried these lessons into my work life! THANK YOU DAD!

To Pick Friends Wisely: Now for YEARS You tried to get me to stop hanging around my Looser Friends (If Only I Would Have Listened!!!) I re-learned this principle later in life, and the truth that “You become like the people you hang around!” This has made an incredible difference in my life. THANK YOU DAD For Planting The Seed!

One Of The Biggest Things You Taught Me Came In 2 Ways…

The 1st Way by Your Example: The example of all your projects around the house, big and small. How you approached them.

The 2nd Way Through A Guy Named Zig Ziglar: You provided me with some Zig Ziglar tapes when I was a security guard at Enron and one of the Major Transforming things I learned from these tapes was actually what you already taught me by your example!

Through These 2 Sources You Taught me That To Accomplish Almost Anything, You Really only Have To Follow A Few Simple Steps…

All You Have To Do Is…

• Pick Your Objective

• Create A Plan (Blueprint)

• Work At It Till You Accomplish It

Much of my personal and career success stems from these lessons!

THANK YOU DAD for all you’ve taught me, for putting up with my youth and ignorance, and for being there for me when I needed You most!

I Love You Dad,

Mark Edward Duin (9/11/11)

Employers Job Postings

Posted In Employer Job Posting | No comments

This article covers useful information about employer job postings

.
So, you have a problem. You’re looking for a job in this down economy and it’s not an easy
task. But did you know that employers also have a difficult time trying
to locate the best potential employees for their open positions?

When you think about this you’ll notice that there just may be a
solution for both the job seeker and the employer, if the job seeker
goes about finding a job in the right way.

Alright so you’ve probably noticed there are many places to post your
resume online. And this can be a good thing or a bad thing for you as
you search for a job.

On the positive side you can display your job skills and experience in
a broad sweeping manner across the web. If you’re like most job
seekers, you will just post a single resume to multiple sites and hope
to get a great deal of exposure.

But here’s the downside to posting a single resume to multiple job
posting sites across the web…

If you are not using the keywords and key phrases that employers and
recruiters are looking for, your resume will be completely ignored
everywhere it is posted.

Don’t worry though, there is good news. Here are a few things you can
do to to help employers find you…

1. Search online at multiple job posting sites for open positions in
your career field. Read through as many of them as you can find. As you
do this you will notice a number of keywords and key phrases that keep
coming up. These will be terms and phrases related to your job field.
Terms and phrases you find in a majority of the job postings you review.

2. Next make several versions (3 to 5) of your resume and be sure to
sprinkle each of them with the key phrases and key terms you’ve found
for your position and job field.

3. Then simply go to multiple job posting sites and post the different
versions of your resume on these sites.

When you post multiple versions of your resume using Key terms and key
phrases that employers in your industry use, you greatly increase your
chances of being found by these employers. This happens simply because
when employers and recruiters search the Internet looking for top-notch
employees, they are searching using their own key phrases and key terms.

The closer your resume matches what employers are looking for the
greater your chances of getting called for an interview!

I hope you found this information related to Employer Job Postings helpful.

Online Employment Opportunities

Posted In Online Job Openings | No comments

Online employment opportunities are becoming more and more common. In fact online job opportunities are growing faster than standard work place jobs.

If you think about it there are some real advantages for companies who can create online jobs. It saves them money by reducing the amount of office space needed, and that of course includes savings in power, lights, heating and cooling and so on.

FREE Job Search Training Video Series

There are also a few perceived disadvantages as well. Things like the boss can’t see you working so they are not sure if you are!

Task based online employment is usually a good fit for many companies. For example a claims processesor could have a target to process some number of claims per hour or per day. An advertisement submitter could submit so many ads per day.

Many project based tasks work well in the online employment environment. As tasks are completed by an online worker, they can be submitted to the employer online.

There are even virtual call centers for customer service, where employees log into the system from home during specific hours and take customer service calls, all done from the comfort of home, online. The possibilities are endless!

If you decide to pursue an online job opportunity, keep in mind that effort is required. You will need to be disciplined. An ideal online worker knows how to manage their time and knows how to stay focused on the work at hand without getting distracted.

The same principles apply for online workers as they do for in-office workers.  You need to be reliable, responsible, be productive and do good work, and you must get along well with others (via telephone or email)! If you’ve mastered these skills you should do just fine.

Ok so where do you find online jobs? You can start by searching job sites like monster.com, careerbuilder.com, indeed.com, linkedIn, Craigslist.com…and so on.  As with any job search it takes a little investigating to find a legitimate online job, but they do exist so keep trying.

When you find online employment opportunities you will want to tailor your resume to show that you have what it takes to be a great, dependable online worker.

Employers will be looking for evidence that you are able to work independently without a lot of supervision and that you are a real focused producer. So try to show in your resume that you are all these things and a whole lot more (only if it’s true of course).

As you search for online jobs keep all these things in mind. In all your communication with potential online employers make sure you are sending the message they are looking for. And that message is that you are a high caliber independent worker who is dependable, responsible, productive, focused and a real pleasure to work with online or in person!
